Regulator vs Unloader Valve | Video
CAT Pumps® elaborates on the difference between a pressure regulator and a pressure regulating unloader valve. Both products set and maintain consistent system pressure, and both offer protection from over-pressurization.

Pressure regulators and unloader check valves both perform roughly the same function in controlling pressure inside a pump. System pressure is maintained by regulating the amount of flow through the bypass port. The difference between a regulator and unloader occurs when flow downstream is stopped. A regulator redirects flow through the bypass port, maintaining full system pressure. An unloader valve closes the fluid passageway and traps pressure in the discharge line. This forces water along a passageway above the check valve, opening the bypass port.
Neither product is directly better, as both perform well in different areas. The check valve, for example, reduces wear and energy consumption, as well as reduces heat rise. A regulator, on the other hand, allows for a constant pressure and for excess flow to be redirected.
