Hydro excavation gained lots of traction in Canada within the oil and gas industries. The brutally cold climate of Canada leaves much of the ground frozen for most of the year. This fact has historically made traditional methods of excavation difficult in this region. The Canadians quickly learned that hydro excavation, with heated water, was an efficient way to get the job done.

Hydro Excavation needs three main systems to efficiently move and transfer earth matter:

A high-pressure water distribution system.Generally, powered by a high-pressure plunger pump. This allows the user to generate enough pressure to blast through soil and other earth matter. The basic components of this system lie in the pump (and drive source, i.e. gas engine, pulley, hydraulic, etc.), hose, trigger gun, extension lance, and nozzle(s).
Vacuum system.The vacuum system is used to lift the slurry (water and debris) from the excavation site and into the holding tank. The holding tank is usually on a mobile truck.
Debris Tank.This system is used to hold the debris and slurry in mass until it can be pumped off in larger volume quantities or redistributed on a job site. Not all applications call for this third system.

So, there you have it. Hydro excavation equipment must combine high-pressure water delivery with vacuum transfer of slurry.
